Mr. Smith graduated from the prestigious SMU Law School in Dallas. He went directly into the Dallas County District Attorney’s office as an assistant district attorney. During his tenure at the Dallas County District Attorney’s office Mr. Smith worked as chief prosecutor for several County courts prosecuting misdemeanor cases. Later, Mr. Smith became a felony prosecutor prosecuting all manner of felony offenses including Capitol Murder cases. Mr. Smith was also assigned to the Organized Crime Division prosecuting narcotics trafficking cases. Mr. Smith resigned his position with the district attorney’s office in 1999 to start a criminal defense practice.

Smith handles and defends all State and Federal charges and has gotten not guilty verdicts, dismissals and no bills on cases ranging from sexual assault to capitol murder. His notoriety has increased exponentially during his career. In 2022, he was a key note speaker at the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers annual convention, educating other lawyers on “How to Defend the Indefensible” – based on a not guilty he won for a client who was charged with intoxication manslaughter.

He has appeared on local news broadcasts, in the Dallas Morning News, on other televised crime shows for many high profile cases that captured national media attention.
